Professional Services PR

November 08, 2012

6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Sentry Centers

This event has been postponed due to conditions following Hurricane Sandy. Details on a new date will be announced as available.

Whether you are employed in a professional services firm, are an outside consultant or agency or just curious about what it’s like to promote white collar business services companies, this program is for you!

We’ve assembled a star studded-panel of corporate and agency practitioners representing six sectors of professional services PR:  architecture, engineering, real estate, law, accounting and media buying/planning.  Learn what these pros do every day for the companies and brands they represent. Find out the unique (or not so unique) challenges faced by them. What do PR programs consist of? How has social media helped or hindered getting the word out about these businesses? What is the impact of client confidentiality on doing their jobs?

Our panelists are:

Kayte Steinert-Threkeld, chief marketing officer, Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP (accounting firm)

Kayte Steinert-Threlkeld has served as Anchin’s Chief Marketing Officer for almost eight years and has spent 15 years in accounting marketing and a total of almost 25 years in services marketing.  As a former journalist, educator, and marketer, Ms. Steinert-Threlkeld’s goal has always been to make complex topics easier to understand (with the exception of tax law, which remains a mystery) and to help her organizations and firms put their best public foot forward.

Joan Capelin, president, Capelin Communications (architecture and engineering agency specialist)

Joan Capelin was among the first public relations consultants to specialize in shaping and protecting the reputation of professional service providers, specifically in the design and construction industry.  Capelin Communications began in 1981 after over a decade inside management consulting and design firms. Her work in professional services marketing and public relations has created a body of knowledge and set standards so professionals can communicate effectively. Accredited by PRSA and 1999 Chair of the PRSA College of Fellows, she was the first recipient of the College’s Outstanding Leadership Award and also the first professional services expert to receive PRSA NY’s John W. Hill Award.  Ms. Capelin was the first public relations recipient of the Society for Marketing Professional Services’ Marketing Achievement Award and became an SMPS Fellow by acclaim.  Her pioneering work in support of the design professions has also brought Honorary Membership in the American Institute of Architects, the highest distinction accorded a non-architect.  Columnist, author, and podcaster, Joan wrote her third book, Communication by Design, in 2005.  She earned her BA from Wellesley College;  her MA from Middlebury College Graduate School in Paris and is a Fulbright Scholar.

Amy Fantini Deschodt, head of media relations, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP (law firm)

Amy Deschodt is Head of Media Relations at international law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, where she is responsible for the firm’s public relations and media relations programs.  Prior to joining Cleary Gottlieb in 2003, she was a reporter at The American Lawyer and Corporate Counsel magazines.  Before this, she worked as a paralegal at Cleary Gottlieb, spending time in both the firm’s New York and Brussels offices.  She holds a B.A., cum laude, from The College of the Holy Cross and an MSc from The London School of Economics and Political Science. Ms. Deschodt also studied at Mansfield College, Oxford University, in Oxford, England.  She is a member of the fundraising committee of charity Play Rugby USA and is a New York Cares volunteer.

Scott Berwitz, Corporate Communications Director, Mindshare
(media buying/planning agency)

Scott Berwitz is Corporate Communications Director for Mindshare, one of the world’s largest media investment agencies with 113 offices in 82 countries, over 6,000 employees and $27.8 billion in billings.  In this role, Scott handles all media relations and employee communications for North America, working closely with senior executives, client leads, HR and business development to shine a light on their successes and increase awareness of the company’s innovative work.

Previously, Mr. Berwitz served as Director of Corporate Communications for Horizon Media, the largest independent media services company in the world, where he led the company’s public relations efforts including press coverage, speaking engagements and awards.

Mr. Berwitz has an extensive background in public relations, having worked at several PR agencies including Padilla Speer Beardsley Public Relations where he developed and led strategic public relations campaigns for a number of business-to-business clients. He also played an integral role in the company's new business initiatives. Before that, he served as Senior Account Executive at KCSA Strategic Communications.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Washington University in St. Louis and currently resides in Manhattan.

Harry Zlokower, president, Zlokower Company Public Relations (real estate agency specialist)

Harry Zlokower is president of Zlokower Company Public Relations.
